Thick heavy plumes of smoke and fire could be seen emerging from properties as rebels attacked homes and temples in Myanmar.

Footage shows the orange blaze lighting up in the night sky on Monday eveing January 23. The burning properties were reportedly situated in the Burmese town Payathonzu, as seen from the Sangkhla Buri district in Kanchanaburi, western Thailand.

The inferno reportedly scorched several properties including at least ten buildings that held military, immigration and communications offices.

Explosions and gunshots were also reportedly heard around 10 pm, when the fire started.

Thailand's Provincial deputy commander-in-chief Colonel Thatchadet Abuarat said they were working closely to ensure villages on the border remain safe.

He said: ‘Our soldiers are prepared anytime to help. We are looking to evacuate some areas and maintain strict patrols.'

Soldiers from across the border were put on alert as it was only 800 metres away from the country's busy Kanchanaburi province, which is a popular destination for tourists.

The Burmese military reportedly flew three YAK-130 combat aircraft to conduct attacks on its enemy forces, including Karen Forces commander-in-chief Colonel Pure Lin's house, which was about 25km away from the burned-down area.

Fighting between the armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the ousting of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Around the country, more than 1,300 civilians are said to have been killed during military crackdowns on protests.
