A ship said to be carrying Burmese army soldiers was bombed by rebel forces on Monday.

Footage shows the smouldering wreckage of the vessel after it was attacked by the Myohla Kachin People's Defence Force (KPDF) in the Shwegu township of Kachin state on July 11.

The boat was allegedly ferrying military personnel across the Irrawaddy River to provide backup to a military detachment battling militants in Kachin.

Four people were reported killed, while it is unclear how many were injured.

The bombing comes a month after the Myohla KPDF ambushed junta soldiers with landmines in Shwegu township on June 12.

The struggle between armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the ousting of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Around the country, thousands of civilians are said to have been killed during military crackdowns on protests.
