Locals made decorations with red flowers ahead of the Songkran festival in Thailand.

Housewives expertly wove together chains of crimson dipterocarpus intricatus flowers to create wind chimes to be displayed in the Nong Ruea District of Khon Kaen province.

The red garlands were then strung onto bamboo cones, which will be hung in front of the Khon Kaen Provincial Hall to provide a pretty backdrop for tourists on the anticipated holiday.

District chief Pichai Wanta said eager residents have made more than 3,000 wind chimes in Nong Ruea alone, with an estimated 100,000 strings completed in total.

The Khon Kaen governor had ordered locals to produce the chains using the dipterocarpus intricatus, which were pleasing to the eye and easy to find in nature.

The decorations, which vary in price from hundreds to thousands of baht depending on size and complexity, skyrocketed in demand as the festival neared.

The Songkran festival is celebrated every year in Thailand in mid-April. It involves locals splashing each other with water to bring good luck for the year ahead.
