06:38 Hrs. NCCC dispatched a working commercial vehicle fire (pay loader) at the Mount Carmel Cogen, 1226 Park Avenue, Marion Heights.
Township Fire Marshal Brian Hollenbush confirmed he could see a header indicating a working fire prior to arrival. Chief then confirmed that he had a tanker on the box due to the location of the fire. 2 hand-lines were stretched as units prepared to use foam to extinguish the blazing pay loader. Crews worked for a little over an hour before the box was placed in service.
The plants operation remained on line during this incident as it did not involve the plant at any time.
According to the Mount Carmel Cogen website the Cogen is a co-generation power plant with 40 megawatts net production. It burns high-ash anthracite coal waste (culm) fuel roughly 3,250 btu mixed with limestone. This provides electrical power to the PJM power grid which services much of the Northeastern United States. It also uses excess energy to provide hot water to an adjacent 10 acre greenhouse. The plant is a community leader employing 47 members of the area, cleaning local streets through volunteer work, and sponsoring little league teams.
