There were colourful scenes on the streets of Izalco in El Salvador, when the local Roman Catholic faithful took to the streets for Holy Thursday (5 April).

The Catholic community of Izalco in Sonsonate, performed a centennial 'procession of the Christs' to mark the key day in Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday.

The procession was suspended last year because of the pandemic, so this year's event had particular significance for attendees.

Twelve images of crucified Christ were carried by various Catholic brotherhoods through the streets of the town over 16 hours.

The event that is seen as particularly symbolic of the fervour of Holy Week in the country, as well as the influence of local indigenous customs on global Christian traditions.

Izalco is located 57km (35 miles) from the capital city of San Salvador, and retains its significant indigenous roots.
