Throwing a cast net in Seguin Texas at the local park for small bait landed this!
At a local park in Seguin Texas, named Starke Park, there is a spilloff of water from the waste treatment plant. Although it is clean water it is still fish I only use for bait. Normally I catch perch sunfish that are about 4 to 8 inches in length. However, on this day there was something giant in my net. On that day my daughter took the camera to shoot the video because we thought it was a record breaking perch sunfish. I am continuing to learn about fish and over the years it became clear to me this is a Tilapia. Fish was caught in the Guadalupe River in a section of water that was 3 feet deep with a cast net.
Tilapia are a family of cichlid fish that are native to Africa, but have been introduced to many other parts of the world. They are popular for aquaculture and are also a popular food fish. Tilapia are hardy fish and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, making them well-suited for a variety of habitats.
Tilapia are typically small to medium-sized fish, with a maximum length of about 2 feet. They have a laterally compressed body with a forked tail. The color of tilapia can vary depending on the species and the environment, but they are typically silver or gray with dark spots.
Tilapia are omnivorous fish and will eat a variety of food, including plants, insects, and small crustaceans. They are bottom-feeders and will often sift through the sand or mud for food. Tilapia are also known to be cannibalistic and will eat smaller fish.
Tilapia are an important part of the food chain in many parts of the world. They are a food source for humans, other fish, and birds. Tilapia are also used as a biocontrol agent in some areas, as they can help to control populations of algae and other aquatic plants.
Tilapia are a relatively easy fish to care for and can be kept in a variety of aquariums. They are also relatively inexpensive to purchase, making them a popular choice for both experienced and beginner fishkeepers.
Here are some additional facts about tilapia:
Tilapia are one of the most popular aquaculture fish in the world.
Tilapia are a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
Tilapia are relatively easy to breed and raise.
Tilapia are not native to North America, but have been introduced to many parts of the continent.

Here are the steps on how to use a cast net in fresh bodies of water:
Choose the right cast net. There are many different sizes and types of cast nets available, so it's important to choose one that is the right size for the fish you are trying to catch and the body of water you are fishing in.
Find a good spot. Cast nets are most effective in calm water with a sandy or muddy bottom. Look for areas where fish are likely to be feeding, such as near weed beds or around rocks.
Tie a weight to the lead line. This will help the net sink to the bottom of the water.
Spread the net out. Hold the net in your hands and spread it out so that it is completely open.
Throw the net. Make a smooth, fluid motion as you throw the net. The goal is to get the net to open up completely in the water.
Pull in the net. Once the net is in the water, start pulling it in slowly and steadily. As you pull, keep the net tight so that the fish cannot escape.
Check the net. Once you have pulled the net in, check to see if you have caught any fish. If you have, remove the fish from the net and release them back into the water.
Here are some additional tips for using a cast net:
Practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the better you will become at throwing and using a cast net.
Be patient. It may take some time to get the hang of using a cast net. Don't get discouraged if you don't catch any fish right away.
Be safe. Always wear a life jacket when you are fishing in fresh water.
Be aware of your surroundings. Be careful not to throw the net over any rocks or other objects that could damage it.
Have fun! Fishing with a cast net is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
