A family drove through an apocalyptic-looking dust devil tornado.

Bongkodchakon Phutdi and her kids were going on a trip when they spotted by the brown twister in Buriram province, Thailand, on May 6.

Footage shows the 20ft-tall mini-tornado blocking the road. The vehicle passed through it with the holidaymakers seeing inside the weather phenomenon.

The raging dust devil continued to whirl on the dirt path despite being run over by the family.

Bongkodchakon said: ‘It was fascinating and a bit scary. We were all shouting but it was for us.'

Dust devil tornadoes are types of whirlwinds that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up and rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.

They are not as dangerous as supercell tornadoes, which can cause severe damage.
