Thailand ranks as third best destination for 'digital nomads'
Thailand has been ranked as the third-best destination in the world for digital nomads in a study by an online resume-building service.
The study analysed more than 25,000 Instagram posts tagged with #digitalnomad to determine the most popular destinations for digital nomads.
Thailand ranked behind the United States and Spain, but ahead of Mexico, France, Indonesia, Portugal, Italy, the United Kingdom, and India. Bangkok was the top destination in Asia for digital nomads, with Chiang Mai, Koh Phangan, and Krabi also making the top 10 in Asia.
The study found that digital nomads are drawn to Thailand for its low cost of living, friendly people, and beautiful beaches.
Researchers said Thailand also offers a variety of co-working spaces and cafes that are designed for digital nomads.
However, problems include visa issues that actually make working there illegal without the drawn-out bureaucratic process of obtaining a work permit. Widespread corruption, a lack of health and safety, undercurrents of xenophobia and language barriers can also hinder digital nomads.
There have been calls for Thailand to tap into the market for digital nomads by Introducing a new visa specifically for digital nomads and making it easier for digital nomads to open bank accounts and get a SIM card. However, there have so far been no changes made to its current bureaucracy.
The phrase ‘digital nomad' has emerged in recent years to describe a person who works remotely from anywhere in the world.
They typically use technology to do their work, such as a laptop and internet connection. Digital nomads often travel to different locations, but they can also work from home or from a co-working space.
