A tornado wreaked havoc when it whirled across a field picking up debris in the Philippines.

The twister formed near the Dalipay area of Milaor town in Camarines Sur province and tore roofs from buildings before moving towards the nearby field on July 2.

Footage shows corrugated iron roofing, dust, and pieces of rubbish flying through the air when they were caught in the raging winds as terrified residents watched.

Local authorities said at least three wooden houses were damaged during the tornado's onslaught.

Barangay Dalipay chairman Romeo Rodriguez told reporters that the local government is providing financial assistance while the homes were being repaired.

A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that connects the earth and a storm cloud. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the rise of warm, humid air and the fall of cooler air inside a thunderstorm create spinning currents that condense into a visible whirling funnel.

Tornadoes spawned from supercell thunderstorms are the most common, and often the most damaging.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
