Innovative wind-assisted ship Annika Braren was seen departing Sheerness, Kent yesterday evening (July 13).

The ship has been retro-fitted with a Flettner Rotor column on the bow as part of the Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) Project funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

A study recently found such additions could lead to up to 10% fuel savings for commercial shipping.

The wind-powered rotor pairs with the engine to save fuel or help propel the ship faster.
