Protesters slam disqualification case against Thai PM frontrunner Pita Limjaroenrat
An anti-dictatorship youth group held a protest slamming a disqualification case filed against the country's election winner Pita Limjaroenrat, who is being blocked from becoming Prime Minister.
The pro-democracy organisation KoratMovement, joined by local residents, gathered at the Thao Suranari monument on July 12 to voice their support for the progressive politician, who leads the liberal Move Forward Party in Thailand.
They voiced anger towards the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand, which had filed a complaint against Pita over his father's shares in an inactive broadcaster. The case is seen as a potential grounds for disqualification and has been criticised as politically motivated.
Footage shows the protesters displaying signs reading: 'What is the purpose of EC?', 'Listen to the people's voice', 'MPs and senators must stand beside people', and 'Don't be lackeys of a dictator.'
KoratMovement said that 'the will of the people was clear', with Pita being their preferred candidate for prime minister. The group added that locals have become more politically aware, as evidenced by the election results.
There were 30 police officers monitoring the peaceful protest, which ended without conflict.
The Move Forward Party won the most seats in a national poll on May 15.
However, a junta-appointed cabal of 250 'senators' handpicked from the country's benighted institutions will now cast the deciding votes on which party can govern - rendering any elections a sham.
The ultra-conservative senators - branded 'dinosaurs' by critics - have pledged their loyalty to protecting the monarchy and vowed to prevent the Move Forward party from entering government due to its stance on modernising the state and watering down the Lese Majeste law, which they see as a threat to national security.
