STORYLINE:

The first phase of a carbon emission reduction demonstration project of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) was successfully connected to the grid on Wednesday in Zhuhai, south China's Hainan Province.

The project, which integrates solar power generation with power storage and charging, will significantly promote clean energy production and consumption in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The project is divided into three phases. The first phase, involving photovoltaic panels that cover an area of 42,000 square meters, or equivalent to 100 standard basketball courts, has an installed capacity of 6.5 megawatts. It will produce 7 million kWh of "green electricity" in the first year of its official operation.

The project is equipped with power storage equipment, which can store part of photovoltaic power in off-peak periods and release it in peak hours. It can provide power to the CNOOC Zhuhai construction site around the clock and achieve "zero-carbon" operation.

The first phase of the project can save nearly 2,100 tons of standard coal per year, cut carbon dioxide emissions by 5,506 tons and nitrogen oxide emissions by 12.8 tons. The third phase of the project, which integrates optical storage and charging, will have a total capacity of 20 megawatts when completed and will be operational by 2025.
