172 migrants were abandoned in a tractor-trailer on the side of a highway on the Jaltipan-Cosoleacaque highway in Mexico's Veracruz last Friday (July 21).

According to a statement released by the National Migration Institute (INM), 27 were unaccompanied minors from Guatemala, Honduras, and Ecuador. There were also 44 families of 105 individuals from Guatemala and Honduras and 40 single adults.

Mexico lies along the migrant route connecting Central America to the United States. Migrants often travel in the cramped back of tractor-trailers heading for the U.S.-Mexico border, which is a perilous journey.
