STORYLINE:
A policeman was killed and several others were injured in a suicide blast in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, police said.
The incident happened in a mosque located in a remote area of the Khyber tribal district of the province, where a suicide bomber blew himself up after police stopped him at the entrance, Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police Akhtar Hayat Gandapur said.
The police were deputed in the area on receiving a tip-off regarding the presence of militants in the area, the Khyber police said in a statement, adding that the bomber was trying to enter the mosque and when the police stopped him, he rushed inside and blew himself up.
"The part of the mosque where the bomber exploded was empty ... However, a policeman who was chasing him was killed and several others got injured," the police statement added.
Rescue teams, who rushed to the site following the explosion, said that part of the mosque also collapsed in the blast.
No group has claimed the attack yet.
