An overworked horse collapsed from exhaustion and heat at a tourist spot in Manila, Philippines.

The hapless animal appeared to have fainted while pulling a carriage in the historic Spanish settlement of Intramuros on May 4. It was later seen standing back up when it was unbridled by its handler.

Onlooker Kim Morilla said: 'It probably collapsed because of the weight it was pulling, and because it was so hot in Intramuros at the time.'

The horse is one of many drawing 'kalesa' carriages to mimic Spanish-era travel in the historic 'Old Manila' area of the city. Many of the buildings, including the imposing Fort Santiago and Manila Cathedral, date back to the 16th century.

However, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society has demanded better care for the equines, said to be deprived of regular veterinary check-ups and proper stables.
