Clever spider disguises itself as dried mango leaf to avoid predators
A clever spider disguised itself as a dried mango leaf to avoid predators.
Footage shows the green and brown rolled-up leaf spider lying on the wet ground as a tourist found it during a hike to a waterfall in Laguna province, the Philippines, on August 10.
The creature refused to move when it was picked up by the hikers while a thin yet still visible web attached to its back.
Photographer Ariston said: 'It really looked like a leaf. It was creepy yet fascinating. It isn't venomous. It's so beautiful especially in person.'
A leaf spider is a type of orb-weaver spider that has evolved to resemble a leaf. This camouflage helps them to avoid being detected by predators and to catch prey. Leaf spiders are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, and urban areas.
