Huge piles of rubbish along railway spark outrage in Bangkok, Thailand
Huge piles of rubbish along a railway sparked outrage among locals in Bangkok, Thailand.
The mounds of trash were generated during the demolition of squatter houses along the Phaya Thai Railway.
The area had been cleared to make way for a high-speed railroad connecting the Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports, but the rubbish - including scraps of wood and corrugated iron sheets - had been left lying next to the tracks.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered the area to be cleaned when photos taken by a Japanese resident spread online showing the unsightly waste strewn along the railway. The Japanese man was particularly angry that trains donated to Thailand by Japan were passing through the piles of rubbish.
The local official said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has already cleared away most of the rubbish, adding discussions will be held with the State Railways of Thailand to determine responsibility for collecting the remaining debris.
He said the government is offering support to residents of the community who were affected by the railroad construction.
Following the cleanup operation, the Japanese national wrote online: 'I went to see the situation near Phayathai station onAugust 3rd. Thanks for the very quick and excellent response.
'I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Chatchart, the governor of Bangkok, the Thai National Railways, the cleaning staff, the Ratchathewi community, and everyone involved. thank you very much. Rubble on the side of the tracks in the Phaya Thai district has been removed and is becoming cleaner. It's still a work in progress, so it will look better in the future.'
The railway project, officially known as the High-Speed Rail Linking Three Airports Project, aims to link the Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports. It is due to be completed in 2029.
