Ten schoolchildren were injured when their bus flipped over onto a rice field in Thailand.

The pupils were onboard the yellow six-wheeler bus travelling along Ubon Ratchathani province when the vehicle overturned onto the waterlogged paddy on September 1.

Police Major Songchan Suwannachote of the Warin Chamrap Police Station said officers received a report at 7:50 am and headed to the scene, where the bus was lying on its side in the field.

Ten children suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals for treatment, officers said.

Police said the bus had been carrying 28 primary and secondary school students when the accident occurred.

The driver Komsan Pinit, 39, told authorities the bus had stumbled when it drove over a small gap on the roadside, causing it to lose control and flip over.

Cops said Komsan was charged with reckless driving resulting in injuries to others.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
