Seven people were injured when a car ploughed through the wall of a university in the Philippines.

Students were knocked down as the out-of-control SUV hurtled into the lobby of the Manila Central University in Metro Manila, on Thursday afternoon.

School staff screamed as the red Mitsubishi Montero Sport crashed through the building's glass entrance before 73-year-old driver Manuel Anonuevo rammed it against a wall.

Footage shows several people lying on the floor as a frantic female security guard checked for casualties trapped under the SUV.

Police said seven people, including four minors, were injured and taken to the hospital.

Police Captain Romel Caburog, acting chief of the Caloocan City Police investigation unit, said: 'The grandfather was fetching his granddaughter and he accidentally stepped on the accelerator of the vehicle. It shot forward into the Education Business building of the school.'

The driver Manuel remained at the scene to surrender to the police. He said: 'I was at the entrance of the school. My car went straight ahead. Luckily, I managed to veer it to the left, otherwise I would have run over the children.

'I didn't want this to happen. I will do what I can to help them with their expenses.'

Authorities said the injured individuals were all in stable condition.

They added Manuel faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple injuries and damage to property. He was detained at the Caloocan City Police Station for further questioning.

The Philippines has one of the highest car crash rates in Southeast Asia, with thousands of fatalities each year often linked to speeding, poor driver's education, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
