STORYLINE:

The Africa Climate Summit 2023 hosted by the African Union and the Government of Kenya officially opened on Monday in Nairobi.

During this summit, the world leaders and other delegates hope to discuss ways to curb the effects of the climate change that has now been termed as a world crisis.

Kenya President William Ruto who officially opened the summit said it was not an ordinary summit, adding the summit is one to design and then build a future of prosperity for Africa and the world.

With the theme "Driving growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world," the summit aims at mobilizing funds to address the increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs both globally and particularly in Africa. The leaders also seek to find a solution for hard-hit countries in Africa especially the ones in deep debt to find solutions to tackle climate change effects and mitigation of further effects.

SOUNDBITE (English): RICHARD KIPLAGAT, Group Director and MD for East Africa, Africa Practice
"Africa Climate Summit is extremely important for Africa and the world because Africa is a renewable energy and natural capital superpower but it has not engaged the world and the climate crisis in a climate positive green growth agenda and it is now time for Africa to take a new position, a progressive and a positive position to engage the world in contributing towards climate resilience and to contribute towards the reduction of CO2 gases."

The United Nations (UN) has estimated that the loss and damage costs in Africa due to climate change are estimated to be between 290 billion and 440 billion U.S. dollars depending on the degree of warming experienced at a period.
