A monorail's doors were jammed wide open as worried passengers clung on for their lives during a terror ride over Bangkok.

The BTS Skytrain suffered a malfunction when it was travelling around 30ft above the ground in the Thai capital.

Terrified passengers clung on for their lives and scattered away from the danger zone to avoid plunging through the open doors. An assistant in a blue uniform was seen peering into the abyss as the train finally came to a stop at the Punnawithi station on Wednesday, September 20.

A shaken passenger said: 'This is what happens when an unlucky person like me gets on the train. I think the electric train is also unlucky, too.'

The Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Skytrain opened in 1999 and carries around a million passengers a day across the city.

However, there has been controversy around its high prices in comparison with similar systems in neighbouring countries such as Singapore, where tickets are 20 per cent cheaper and residents have a much higher average salary.

Bosses claim the higher fares are necessary 'for maintenance'.
