STORYLINE:

Some Gaza residents have returned to their houses during the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but only found rubble and debris. 

In the Al-Zahra neighborhood, south of the Gaza Strip, people were trying to collect some belongings from under the rubble.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): AMJAD KHALIL, Gaza resident
"Before the war, we lived in safety, and when the war started, they destroyed 24 buildings in this neighborhood.
Why did this destruction happen? No missile was launched from here. We didn't do anything for this to happen to us. They destroy only for the sake of destruction.
This is the devastation they caused. Families, women, and children lived in these apartments. Where can they go? Many residents of the Gaza Strip, including this area, have been displaced.
I came here to find any of my belongings that I could take from the rubble, like our clothes. When we fled from here, we did not take our clothes or anything with us."

After weeks of Israeli strikes on Gaza in retaliation for an attack on Oct. 7 by Hamas against Israel, the two sides reached a four-day humanitarian truce last week, which was extended for another two days starting on Tuesday.

The Palestinian death toll from the Israel-Hamas conflict has surpassed 15,000, according to Palestinian figures. Israel said that the Hamas attack killed about 1,200 people while more than 200 people were taken as hostages.
