SA PARLIAMENT ARSON & TERROR ACCUSED DECLARED UNFIT TO STAND TRIAL
The High Court of South Africa , Western Cape Division has declared Zandile Christmas Mafe unfit to stand trial converting him from criminally accused to a mental health patient.
Mafe was arrested in January of 2022 near the South African parliamentary precinct. It is alleged that he torched the New Assembly and the Old assembly by sprinkling petrol on the carpets and curtains. The building was gutted and will cost around R 2 billion to rebuild.
During the latest hearing, Mafe's lawyer likened him to Dimitri Tsafendas who assassinated the Prime Minister of South Africa, Hendrik Verwoed in 1966. Mpofu went further to accuse the state of wanting to silence Mafe and said his client is ready to stand trial.
