A pair of adorable baby Humboldt penguins were introduced to zoo visitors on Children's Day in Thailand.

The curious little chicks received a warm welcome at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province a day before the Children's Day weekend on January 12.

Narongwit Chodchoy, director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, said both birds were deemed healthy by vets, with two more chicks expected to hatch from their eggs soon.

He said young Humboldt chicks start out with gray feathers, and gain their distinctive black-and-white plumage as they grow older. The chicks' parents take turns taking care of their young.

Narongwit said: 'According to the inspection by the vet team, both of the baby penguins were deemed healthy, but their sexes cannot be identified until they are around one year old. this is another success in reproducing wildlife for the zoo, as Khao Kheow Open Zoo already has 50 Humboldt penguins.'

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo was offering free admission to children under 12 years old or under 135 centimetres on Children's Day, January 13.

There were various activities planned, including a kids' talent show, mascot dances, an exotic snake show, and many games.

Additionally, attendees can meet Phuengwan TV Music, a locally popular singer.

In addition to the mentioned activities, children can also learn more about the wildlife being cared for at the zoo.

Narongwit said there will also be a live feed arranged for those who cannot physically come to the event but still want to join the festivities.

Humboldt penguins, scientifically known as Spheniscus humboldti, are a species of medium-sized penguins native to the coasts of Chile and Peru. These birds are easily recognizable by their distinctive black and white feathers, and are named after the Humboldt Current, a cold, nutrient-rich ocean current that influences their habitat.

They are listed as 'vulnerable' under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.
