STORYLINE:
After the Israeli attacks forced many children in the Gaza Strip to flee their homes and schools, Intisar al-Arabid, a Gaza-based Palestinian teacher, launched her own initiative to teach displaced students in her shelter in the southern city of Rafah.
Al-Arabid offers free lessons to school-age children at the al-Quds primary school in Rafah, which has been turned into a shelter for displaced people.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): INTISAR AL-ARABID, Palestinian teacher
"Because of the war, the children suffer from anxiety and worry. But later, they become ready to receive their lessons. Our children prove to the world that even if they do not have schools, they can study; even if they have only pens, they will still start to draw and write. Some of our children start to write poems. In addition, they asked me if we will continue our education after we get back to our homes. I said yes even if there are no schools. We can build our schools for our upcoming generations."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): HEBA HAMAD, Palestinian student
"It is a very difficult thing to lose everything in the north. Our school was destroyed. My grandmother's house was destroyed, and they were all killed. Today we were surprised by the news of the martyrdom of my aunt, her children, and her husband as their house was targeted. However, here in the Quds school, we started studying and joined courses."
According to the Gaza-based Health Ministry on Monday, the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 25,295.
