STORYLINE:

Israel has resumed battles in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday amid growing international calls for a ceasefire.

In its latest operational update, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that its troops have returned to areas where they previously operated.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): FARID MAHMOUD, Gaza resident
"My family consists of eight members. We were having lunch in the bedroom, and suddenly, a missile hit us and killed some of my children.
As you can see, there is nothing left. I am now looking for the remains of my children.
We do not carry weapons, not even a stick. And they attack those of us who are not security threats."

Over the past few weeks, attacks in the north of the strip had decreased following Israel's assertion of gaining control over the area.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry reported earlier Monday that at least 27,478 Palestinians had been killed from the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The attacks were triggered by a surprise Hamas assault on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which Israel said killed about 1,200 people.
