This is the terrifying moment an enraged elephant rampaged through a village in India.

Footage shows the tusker stomping across a road and attacking passing vehicles in the outskirts of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu on January 25.

The agitated animal sparked alarm when it charged at an oncoming Bolero vehicle and knocked over a motorcycle as onlookers shouted to scare it away.

Forestry officials were able to drive it back into the wilderness with no one injured.

The elephant rampage came days before two tourists had a narrow escape from another furious jumbo at a national park in Karnataka on January 31.

The two men had left their car to take selfies but were sent running for their lives when the animal rushed at them.

Nobody was injured but wildlife officials are now monitoring the movement of the jumbo and securing the area to try and prevent it from returning.

An estimated 300 to 400 people are killed by elephants each year in India. Tragically, 40 to 50 elephants are killed due to conflict with humans.

Conservationists found that only 22 per cent of elephant habitat is protected, with increasing human encroachment leading to encounters and competition for resources.
