A Singaporean woman was killed in a freak go-karting accident when her hair became tangled in the rear wheels.

Arini Mohamed Adinan, 33, was on a holiday with friends celebrating her birthday when she crashed into a barrier at the Golden City Go Kart track in Bengkong, Indonesia, on Wednesday.

Police said that Arini was flung from the seat and died when her ‘very long hair' became entangled in one of the vehicle's rear tyres.

Police Commissioner Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, head of public relations for the regional police in the Riau Islands, said: 'The victim was from Singapore but to celebrate her birthday, she took a vacation with her friends to Indonesia. During the trip, they visited the go-kart track.

'There were no problems during the deceased's first round of go-karting. However, go-kart number 14 suddenly crashed into the tyre barrier at high speed. The tyres were not the issue.

'Witnesses saw the victim in a go-kart with the number 14 and driving two laps around the track. Her go-kart hit the barrier in the circuit.'

Officers said that Arini had been wearing helmet but it was reportedly dislodged from the impact of the crash.

She was reportedly not wearing a hair net, with the caps intended to keep long hair tucked inside, and her long locks were pulled into the rear wheels.

Police said that Arini was cut free and rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead. Her body was then moved to Budi Kemuliaan Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The policeman added: 'Barelang Resort Police is conducting an investigation. If we find negligence by the operator, legal action will be taken.

'In principle, operators of tourist attractions should have standard operating procedures that take care of the environment, health and safety of the visitors.

'All operators, when carrying out their duties, must supervise and manage the places visited by tourists.'

Police said that the owners of Golden City Go-Kart had assisted with the repatriation of Arini's body for a funeral in Singapore.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said its consulate general in Batam had been offering consular help and support to Arini's family.
