STORYLINE:

Sascha Schuerrer and his wife Johanna Garzon-Schuerrer are both engineers at Audi FAW NEV Company, a joint venture between German auto giant Audi and Chinese automaker FAW in Changchun, northeast China's Jilin Province. 

The couple has come to work in China to support a Sino-German collaboration project.

"We both had been working at Audi in Germany since 2015. For 7 months, we have been here supporting the new NEV company in Changchun. And I'm responsible for the rollout of the new SAP logistics system."

In Changchun, China's auto hub, Audi and FAW are making remarkable progress on their first pure electric vehicle production facility in the country.

The project, which broke ground in June 2022, has begun pre-mass production.

"For us, the most important thing of this cooperation of course is our new company that has been created here in order to bring our new electric vehicles to the Chinese market and to also of course produce them here. We together with many other experts have come here to support this. And of course, we also have a huge workforce of local colleagues supporting. This is, we think, also an important economical factor for Changchun in the region."

Schuerrer said China's NEV market has witnessed robust expansion and attracted many foreign brands to increase their presence here.

"So we already see it on the streets here every day that there are already a lot and a lot of electric vehicles on the streets. So we see that the new electric energy vehicle market is really increasing every year, especially in China and that's of course also why we are here."

According to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), in 2023, China produced and sold 9.587 million and 9.495 million units of NEVs respectively, ranking first in the world for nine consecutive years.
