St Piran, traditional Cornwall patron saint day celebration, Perranporth Dunes, Cornwall, UK
Patriots make pilgrimage across the dunes to celebrate St Piran's Day at the ruined church, Patron Saint of Cornwall, UK
Saint Piran of the 5th Century arrived from Ireland at Perranporth. He is the patron saint of Cornwall and Tin mining, His day of celebration being the 5th of March. The major event in Cornwall is always the procession across the wild Dunes of Perranporth to the remains of what was his Oratory which is now part submerged and his now ruined church. The Church is possibly the oldest Christian building in England. The White Cross on black is both his, and now Cornwall's flag. St Piran was reputed to like a drink and died after falling down a well. although legend says he was two hundred years old. The Grand Bard of Cornwall Pol Hodge addressed the throng.
