A man hoping to celebrate his birthday with a fishing trip had to rush to the hospital instead when he accidentally hooked himself in the nose and could not get the sharp metal lure out.

Hu Wa, a graduate student specialising in wild fishing, experienced the startling mishap while trying to reel in a large fish during an outing in Luoyang in Henan, China, on Thursday, March 14.

Unexpectedly, the fish he tried to catch broke free from the hook and it sprung back, hooking him in the nose.

As a result of the accident, Hu had to rush to the hospital's emergency room for immediate medical attention.

He went to the hospital emergency room to have the hook removed and received three stitches.

Hu filmed the painful episode. In the clip, he briefly explained what had happened as he walked to his car before heading to the hospital with the large hook hanging from his left nostril along with a shiny fish-shaped lure.

Although he was able to laugh at himself, Hu admitted it hurt him when he moved his face.

He said: 'This is s a reminder to all anglers to always prioritise safety when fishing.'

The hook was later removed.

Hu added: 'Thank you all for your concern. The fish hook has been removed.

'I went to the hospital emergency room and received anaesthesia. We tried pulling it out for a long time but couldn't, so eventually, it was surgically removed, and then three stitches were applied.'
