Varanasi Skies turn grey as Shiva Devotees play Masan Holi at Manikarnika Ghat
Thousands of Hindu devotees gathered on the Manikarnika Ghat river bank in Varanasi on Thursday to celebrate this year’s Masan Holi Festival.
Footage shows locals and tourists dancing and smearing each other with colours and ash from the pyre at the cremation ground, while others played drums and carried offerings.
The tradition, which begins with prayers to Mahasha mashan Nath, the lord of cremation ground, is about celebrating death and gaining salvation.
Varanasi is well known for its celebrations of life and death and is one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism, as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
