Vibrant scenes as thousands gather to celebrate Holi in northern India
Thousands of Hindu devotees gathered on the Manikarnika Ghat river bank in Varanasi on 11 March Tuesday to celebrate Masan Holi festival.
Footage shows locals and tourists dancing and smearing each other with colours and ash from the pyre at the cremation ground, while others played drums and carried offerings.
The tradition, which begins with prayers to Mahashamashan Nath, the lord of cremation ground, is about celebrating death and gaining salvation.
Varanasi is well known for its celebrations of life and death and is one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism.
