Unprecedented rainstorm ravages southern China leaving 7 people dead

On April 2, a student from Jiangxi Institute of Fashion Technology captured the moment that the rainstorm came.

Video filmed in Nanchang, southern China, shows lightning and thunder booming outside the dormitory while several clothes racks hanging on the balcony are swaying incessantly in the wind and rain. Even one window has even been blown away by the storm.

On April 2, 2024, the Jiangxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau initiated a Level IV emergency response to a significant meteorological disaster. On the same day, the China Meteorological Administration upgraded its weather warning to an orange alert for this disaster which was the first time the highest level of warning for severe convective weather has been issued since the standard was released.

As of April 3, 2024, the wind and hail disaster has affected 9 prefecture-level cities and 54 counties in Jiangxi Province, including Nanchang and Jiujiang, affecting 93,000 people. Seven people have lost their lives due to the disaster. The affected area of crops amounts to 5,700 hectares, with direct economic losses estimated at 150 million yuan. Further assessment and verification of the disaster are ongoing.
