A pet dog trapped behind a wall after being abandoned by his owners was rescued in the Philippines.

The Aspin pooch named Wally was left by a family when they moved out of their apartment building in Cavite City.

Wally was sealed inside the concrete wall when the unit was renovated and survived for almost a month drinking dirty water from an open drainage channel.

The canine was only retrieved on February 23 when horrified neighbours who had just moved into the building confirmed where the pooch was and called for help.

Footage shows a good Samaritan smashing the concrete wall to reveal Wally inside the cramped and dark space, looking very weak and starving.

Animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Senior Vice President Jason Baker said: ‘This poor dog not only endured the heartbreak and confusion of being left behind by his family but also spent weeks trapped behind a wall, barking desperately for help and struggling to escape.'

With PETA's help and that of local officials, Wally was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where his wounds were treated and he was fed.

Wally is now under the car of the organisation's shelter through its program ‘Ampon Alaga' where he is waiting for a new family to adopt him.
