STORYLINE:
To mark Earth Day on Monday, the government of Kenya partnered with local environmental protection groups to launch a campaign to help reclaim a dilapidated area of Ol-Bolosat Forest.
The campaign's first phase aims to plant 70,000 tree seedlings on one hundred acres of land.
According to officials, this will also help to reclaim Lake Ol-Bolosat, which has dried up due to the adverse effects of climate change and human activities.
Ol-Bolosat Forest and the Abardare Ranges serve as the main water catchments for Lake Ol-Bolosat, but most of the rivers that feed the lake have dried up due to factors such as farming and rampant deforestation.
SOUNDBITE (Swahili/English): BEATRICE KANG'ETHE, Deputy County Commissioner of Nyandarua
"We are here to celebrate this day because we know and understand that we must watch our forests very keenly. Nobel Laureate Professor Wangari Mathaai said that nature is very unforgiving. If you destroy nature, nature will destroy you."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Nairobi.
