To mark World Mangrove Day (July 26) conservationists planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi Province.
World Mangrove Day 2024, people plant 1000 mangrove seedlings to maintain ecological continuity and protect the aquatic ecosystem between sea, coast and land.
Commemorating World Mangrove Day on July 26 2024, the El Capitan Indonesia Nature and Adventure Lovers Institute (LPAP) planted thousands of mangrove seedlings at a location on the coast of Mertasari Village, Maesa Village, Parigi District, Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, on July 26 2024 .
According to the Head of the Environmental Division of LPAP El Capitan Indonesia Wahab Usman, the activity of planting thousands of mangrove seedlings involved a number of Nature Lovers Groups (KPA) in Parigi City.
Meanwhile, LPAP El Capitan Indonesia, he said, was the initiator of this activity by preparing thousands of mangrove seedlings.
"We took the mangrove seeds planted in this activity at the rehabilitation demonstration plot location. The planting model is in the form of propagules, by plugging them in. Coincidentally, it's mangrove fruit season right now. "So, it's easy for us to get seeds," he said.
He said that this activity of planting mangrove seedlings was not only carried out to commemorate World Mangrove Day. However, similar activities are also carried out every week.
Moreover, the development of newly planted mangrove seeds must be monitored. If damage occurs, the party replants or replaces damaged seeds with new ones.
Apart from that, his party also cleaned up rubbish at the mangrove rehabilitation demonstration plot location in Mertasari Village-Maesa Village.
"Every time we carry out planting, we continue to carry out waste collection activities at the mangrove rehabilitation demonstration plot location," he said.
He added that this routine activity is carried out as an effort to preserve the marine ecosystem. Apart from that, it also aims to provide education to the community, especially those living on the coast of Tomini Bay. Because, mangrove trees or better known as mangroves are very useful.
Apart from being an underwater ecosystem, mangroves can also prevent coastal erosion and tsunami waves.
Moreover, the Tomini Bay area in the former Parigi District has been heavily polluted with waste from illegal mining activities.
“If not us, who else will care about coastal ecosystems. "We hope that this activity can provide education to the wider community about the importance of mangrove rehabilitation," said Wahab.
It is known that mangroves are a very clear source for maintaining aquatic ecosystems between sea, coast and land. Apart from that, the benefits of mangrove forests will also help humans get the most comfortable climate and weather to prevent natural disasters.
