Chitrai festival started on 9th April at Koothandavar temple near Ulundurpet, Kallakurichi district. Transgenders from various states in India visit the temple and adorn themselves as bridal. They accepted Aravan god as their husband and tied the thaali (neckless worn by a women to signify that she is married) with the hands of the priest. They danced and enjoyed the whole night. The next day, the temple procession was held. Then, according to their custom, the transgenders removed the mole from their foreheads, broke their bangles and renounced their thaali. They believe that if you come to this temple and pray with faith in your heart and tie a thali, it will be fulfilled. After renouncing the thali, they took a bath in the wells there, dressed in white sarees (widows used to wore white saree in some villages in india), and left for their native villages.
