Austria: Northern Rockhopper Penguin Chicks Hatch at Vienna Zoo
Vienna, Austria - April 24, 2024
Vienna Zoo is delighted to introduce its newest arrivals: chicks of the Northern Rockhopper Penguins. The first two chicks hatched on March 31st and have already been taken under the care of the animal keeper team to ensure their continued healthy development before reintegrating them into the group for socialization.
Vienna Zoo is one of the few zoological gardens in Europe to celebrate successful breeding of this highly endangered penguin species annually. Optimal conditions within the facility, a suitable breeding group, and an experienced care team are the foundations of this success.
Since 2015, Vienna Zoo has been coordinating the European Endangered Species Breeding Program (EEP) for the Northern Rockhopper Penguins, overseeing breeding efforts across Europe and sharing its expertise.
