A group of devotees risk serious injuries as they collect broken coconuts being thrown by huge crowds at a wall during a chariot festival in Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu.

Footage shows the group wearing helmets in an attempt to protect themselves from the hundreds of coconuts being tossed at the wall.

Locals believe the throwing of coconuts symbolises offerings of abundance and prosperity.

"The breaking of coconuts is a sacred tradition that has been passed down through generations," explained one devotee, his hands clasped in prayer. "To participate in this ritual is a blessing beyond measure, and we are willing to risk everything for the chance to express our devotion to Sevakaperumal."
