China's worst flooding in 30 years forces closure of main train station amid rising river levels
Recently, Guilin City in Guangxi has been hit by rare heavy rainfall, causing the water levels of major rivers like the Li River to surge dramatically. Due to continuous downpours, severe flooding occurred on June 19th, leading to significant water accumulation in the waiting hall of Guilin Railway Station. This forced the railway authorities to suspend passenger services at the station, severely impacting local transportation and travelers.
Starting from the evening of June 12th, Guilin has been under relentless rain. By 5 PM on June 19th, the water level at Guilin Station had risen to 148.55 meters, exceeding the warning level by 2.55 meters, marking the highest flood level in the region since 1998.
The flood disaster not only disrupted the normal operations of Guilin Railway Station but also caused significant challenges for local residents. Multiple areas along the Li River were submerged, with water levels in some homes reaching as high as the second floor, leading to widespread power outages. Several famous tourist spots were forced to close, and many bus routes were suspended. In response, the Guilin Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters elevated the city’s flood emergency response to the highest level at 10:20 PM on June 19th, aiming to effectively manage the flood situation.
The Guangxi Meteorological Bureau forecasts that while the rain may weaken in the coming days, the northern regions of Guangxi will continue to experience rainfall. It is expected that major rivers, including the Gui River and Xiang River, will remain above the warning levels. The flood control situation remains critical, and relevant authorities must stay vigilant to ensure the safety of residents' lives and property.
