STORYLINE:

A new energy taxi battery swap station began operating in late June in Turpan, China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): ARKEN ABDUREHIM, Driver
"Electric battery swap taxis have lower operating and maintenance costs. You can swap the battery in just 2 minutes, and they have a cruising range of 350 kilometers. Since I switched to new energy taxi, I no longer worry about waiting in line for gas, which is time-consuming."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): TIAN JIALI, Head of a local taxi company
"Separating car batteries from vehicles can effectively extend the battery's lifespan. With the station in operation, as a taxi usually runs for 8 years, it will save at least 80,000 to 100,000 yuan (about 11,000 to 13,749 USD). Currently, our station can meet the battery exchange needs of 100 to 150 vehicles."

Turpan introduced new energy taxis this year, and there are currently seven such taxis in operation.
