The Sakurajima volcano erupted and spewed a massive ash cloud soaring to 15,000ft in Japan.

Footage shows the Vulcanian eruption marked by a dense grey ash plume in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, on July 14.

A government agency bulletin said: ‘Ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the main crater.'

The event was Sakurajima's 23rd eruption recorded this year.
