The Sakurajima volcano erupted in Japan, sending ash soaring up to 2,000 metres above the crater.

Authorities confirmed that the volcanic activity occurred on Thursday, May 22, at around 8:54 am.

This marked the 128th explosive eruption from Sakurajima so far this year. Emergency services remain on alert in case further eruptions occur.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
