STORYLINE:
A traditional "greasy pole" contest, known locally as "Gostra," was held on Sunday in Msida, Malta. Contestants ran up a greasy, wooden pole and tried to snatch one of three colored flags before falling into the sea.
The flags were spaced apart from each other at the end of the approximately 16-meter pole. Many contestants plunged into the sea before reaching any of the flags.
The annual contest, a Maltese tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, drew large crowds to the seaside to cheer on the participants.
