Homes were flooded as a river bordering Thailand and Myanmar overflowed due to severe monsoon rains.

The Moei River, a natural borderline between the two countries, burst its banks after several days of continuous heavy rain.

Thailand's Mae Sot district in the northern province of Tak saw more than 100 millimetres of rain on July 26, prompting residents to evacuate.

The deluge spilled over into the Rim Moei Market and the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.

Mae Sot district chief Sanya Petset said volunteer defence corps, soldiers, and police were dispatched to assist vendors and residents in relocating to higher ground.

The chief said: 'Rescue operations were slowed down by the overflowing water level. The flood was very high and the water current was fast since the rain was still pouring. Therefore, officers exercised caution in helping the people to prevent unexpected accidents.'

Myawaddy town in Myanmar was also submerged in floodwaters.

The latest reports along the border indicated rising water levels at the Moei River, which is in danger of overflowing again.

The Thai Meteorological Department and Office of the National Water Resources warned that Tak province will continue to be battered by rain until the end of the month.
