World record holder Yang Jiayu claimed the first athletics gold medal for China at the Paris Olympics, winning the women's 20km race walk in one hour, 25 minutes and 54 seconds.
Yang Jiayu's mother, coach, relatives, friends, and fellow residents gathered in front of the television early Thursday at the Xinyuan Community Service Center in Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. They cheered for Yang Jiayu when she crossed the finish line.
