Sakurajima volcano erupts in Japan
Footage shows the spectacular moment Sakurajima Volcano erupted, spewing a 10,000-ft ash plume into the sky in Japan.
The volcano belched a geyser of molten material, with ashfall drifting toward the Satsuma Peninsula in a southwesterly direction at around 12:37 am local time on August 6.
Locals were urged to be vigilant of continued seismic activity.
The eruption is the 26th record this year. The volcano's last was on July 29.
Sakurajima, or 'Cherry Blossom Island', is the most active volcano in Japan known for its sporadic and powerful eruptions.
Japan sits along the western edge Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
