STORYLINE:
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): WEN YAN, Doctor of the 13th batch of the Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea
"I'm Wen Yan from the nephrology department of the Ninth People's Hospital of Chongqing Municipality. I am a member of the 13th batch of the Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea (PNG). In October 2023, our medical team arrived at the Port Moresby General Hospital for a one-year medical aid mission.
In PNG, the number of patients with kidney disease is high and the incidence rate has increased year by year. However, diagnosing and treating conditions of kidney disease is very limited in PNG with a huge deficiency of hemodialysis therapy in its public hospitals. I conducted theoretical and operational training for the local medical staff and actively facilitated the establishment of a hemodialysis room. Eventually, on January 22 this year, the hemodialysis room at Port Moresby General Hospital officially commenced operations.
In the beginning, I was the only one capable of operating hemodialysis treatments. After six months of consistent training and daily operational guidance, the local nurses in the hemodialysis room can conduct standard hemodialysis treatments for patients currently. As of now, they have completed over 700 cases of hemodialysis, marking a significant therapy improvement for the nephrology department of the Port Moresby General Hospital, and even for the entire public healthcare system in Papua New Guinea."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ALBERT ANTHONY, Nephrologist of Port Moresby General Hospital
"She helps us a lot, not only teaching the doctors but also teaching the nurses and the technicians. And also help our surgeon with the fistula operations, since it has been very, very helpful. I am happy as a doctor colleague to work alongside with Doctor Wen."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WEN YAN, Doctor of the 13th batch of the Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea
"The medical staff here treat me as their most trusted tutor, and the patients regard me as their best friend. The bright smiles of the patients after their recovery made me realize the profound significance of the foreign aid mission.
In the following days, I hope to train more talented local doctors and medical staff, doing my utmost to help them master the medical skills so that local people can benefit from it."
