Flash floods from rainstorm engulf streets and sweep away vehicles in China
Flash floods from a heavy rainstorm engulfed streets and swept away vehicles in northern China.
The dramatic video was filmed in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, on August 19.
According to the Dalian Meteorological Bureau, heavy rains began early in the morning, with precipitation reaching 30 to 40 millimetres within an hour in the Dalian Bay area of Ganjingzi District.
In some areas, rainfall surged to 60 millimetres, prompting the issuance of a red alert for heavy rain. By 8:42 a.m., a yellow alert for lightning was also issued, warning residents of potential lightning strikes, brief intense rainfall, and hail.
The torrential rains led to severe flooding across numerous city roads. Low-lying areas were inundated, with water levels rising high enough to submerge vehicles, leaving them floating and blocking traffic.
In the Jinzhou District near Haibin Tourism Road, dozens of cars were tossed around by the floodwaters, with two vehicles being swept into an artificial lake. Residents of a nearby community reported that the iron barriers meant to block the flow of water had likely collapsed under the pressure, causing the cars to be carried away.
In response to the sudden disaster, the Dalian city government and relevant departments acted swiftly, deploying firefighters and traffic police to handle the emergency. They worked diligently to rescue trapped individuals and restore traffic flow.
By noon on August 19, most affected roads had been cleared, and damaged vehicles were being relocated.
Emergency management officials have confirmed that the heavy rain has unfortunately resulted in two fatalities.
